Abstract


Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate skeletal stability of cleft orthognathicsurgery by comparing lateral cephalograms taken 2 different time points post-operatively.

Patients and Methods: 20 patients who underwent cleft-orthognathic surgery at SeoulNational University Dental Hospital between 2007 and 2013 were selected. Pre-op,immediate post-op, and 9~12 months post-op lateral cephalographs were analyzed forhorizontal and vertical movements.

Results: Average amount of maxillary advancement was 3.9¡¾1.2 mm with average relapseof 1.0¡¾0.9 mm. On vertical dimension, average impaction was 0.5¡¾1.6 mm with averagerelapse of 0.9¡¾1.1 mm.

Conclusion: The amount of maxillary horizontal relapse was smaller than previouslyreported in other studies. This may be so because the patients included in this study wentthrough Le Fort I osteotomies with smaller amount of advancement. Patients included inthis study were planned for small amount of maxillary advancement because no furtheradvancement was necessary for esthetic results. Asians, especially East Asian population,have relatively protruded maxilla and mandible, requiring smaller amount of maxillaryadvancement even in cleft-orthognathic patients compared to Caucasian patients whocommonly show retruded maxilla and mandible.
